Governors Surgery 22/3/09

Answers to the Governors surgery held during the Autumn term parent/b teacher interviews.

Travel shelter
It was commented that the travel shelter was rather drafty to stand in to wait for the gates to be opened before and after school. The Governors discussed that it was erected to get people out of the rain to change shoes or shelter during these times rather than out of any draft. The cost of sides will be looked in to but could be quite prohibitive.

School meals
There were a number of comments regarding the meals provided by SCS. The school is looking into other providers and appreciates parental concerns regarding portion sizes, temperature and serving of main meal and pudding together. Mr Crabtree felt that the portion sizes has improved this term and was willing to talk to the actual staff regarding the serving of the food but the governors felt that issues regarding the meals should be taken up with SCS directly as they are the provider that the parents have a contract with and it is out of the direct hands of the school. Things have now moved on from here and the school has decided to end its contract with SCS and has negotiated to have the meals provided by The Barn Owl Inn.

Bags and coats for Year 4
A comment regarding the change of location for year 4 and the confusion as to their belongings at the end of the school day has been addressed. Mr Crabtree has spoken with staff concerned to ensure that all pupils that are in a different classroom at the beginning and the end of the school day are reminded to collect all the belongings from the other end of the school before leaving for the day.

Donations for school trips
One parent asked if there could be an annual donation for school trips rather than a request as and when the trips occurred. This area was discussed and decided that this would not be practical for a number of reasons. Not all trips are organised at the beginning of the school year or beginning of the term so an estimated costs would have to be asked for therefore there being a credit or deficit at the end of the term or year to be accounted for causing much administration. For parents with more than one child at the school this could be quite a substantial sum or prohibitive sum to be requesting.

Boys toilets in The Elliots
There were comments regarding the smell of the boys toilets between class 1 and 2. This has been investigated and the caretaker will be looking into different cleaners and air fresheners. The floor is thoroughly cleaned but unfortunately some people get a little distracted whilst in the toilet and a lack of concentration causes accidents. The boys have been asked to be more careful and to ensure they flush the toilets.

Special needs/extra help assessments
There has been a problem with a parent not being happy with assessments that have been carried out in this area without them first being notified. In the course of the average week, staff do have to do assessments in order to ascertain if there is understanding in an area of education that has been worked on in class or a problem or area of concern. If there is a concern this is bought to the attention of the SEN Jill Weaver. Mr Crabtree has spoken to Jill regarding this concern and between them they have decided that going forward, more communication to parents will take place so that all parties concerned are informed as to the necessary actions required.

School uniform
It was bought to our attention that the school uniform is not as uniform as is stated in the school prospectus. Some children wear trousers/skirts that are grey, some black and a few in blue. We would like to encourage parents to remember that the official uniform is grey trousers/skits and we would appreciate it if this could be adhered to wherever possible. An alternative as a last resort is black.

Governor photos
It was asked for photos of the governing body and what position they hold to be available for everyone to view. These have been available on the school web site and have recently been updated. Also, regular updates as to what they have done in the school to be available for parents. We have been working on this to explain what has been happening during the last year and will endeavour for this to become an annual feature.

It was great to hear some positive comments also which included:
"great parents evening"
"very impressed by Mrs Dennis….a superb addition and asset to the school"
