E-Learning Day Tuesday 29th June 2010If you are unable to access Fronter, here are the tasks set for each of the classes, which can be completed by hand and handed in on Wednesday (Cl4) or Thursday (CL3)
CLASS 3: We would like you to write a recommendation for a book that you think a younger child would enjoy reading. Think about what age group you think the book would be best for, and write about why you are recommending it. Your contribution should be about 100 words long. Remember to include the title and author of the book you have chosen. Describe what sort of book it is: adventure, mystery, fantasy, non-fiction etc.
If you would like to extend your work, you might like to carry out some research on the author: have they written any other books/where do they live/where do they do their writing?
CLASS 4: Imagine you are either a soldier in the trenches of World War I, or a younger sibling of a soldier who is at home in England. You are going to write a letter to your family, describing how you are feeling, what is happening around you, and what the conditions are like. Think about how honest you are going to be: the truth of life in the trenches might be too distressing for a younger sibling to read about! Include what you have learnt so far about life and conditions during this period, as well as any other knowledge you may have. Your letter should be at least 100 words long. |

Music hits high noteThe school's musicians were out in force to show their talents at a recent music spectacular held in the village hall. Intended to show our younger pupils what 2 years or more of music tuition could do for us, our older pupils took the opportunity to showcase their talents. Finally Ms Hammick's daughter, Martha, played the piano and really took our breath away with a faultless performance of a MUSE number.
Class 1 visit Paignton ZooClass 1 had their annual summer trip, this time to Paignton Zoo. Well done to Mrs Dennis for inspiring us all !

Though we did not have many winners of races (Shannon, Mahaela, Bonnie, Bill, Harry, Girls 4 x 100m relay, Tania excepted, there were a lot of seconds, and that consistent performance earned us first place and the trophy for the second year running !! Well done everyone, a fine team effort !
Maths team win annual STOMPOur maths team of Daisy Cook, Isabelle Clark, Annabel Maidment, Bill Brandt and Tamara Mckay added the Huish maths Stomp to their Wellington Maths Challenge crown, by winning by 3 points last Monday. The clinching moment came after they got first place for the poster competition on Pythagoras, giving them a 5 point bonus. After last year's disappointment of coming level first and then losing out as the head teacher had forgotten to tell them to make a flag, it seemed ironic that they should clinch first place on the same basis. Well done everybody !! |
We are nearing John O'GroatsMrs Dennis' run to Buckingham Palace has really taken off. It was our expectation that we would, as a whole school, run to the Palace in London by the end of the term. However, having completed that task in just a week, we have revised the plan and are now aiming to reach John O'Groats by the end of term. We have passed Cambridge, York, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Aberdeen and are now almost at Inverness. The Blue House has run the farthest so far, but the others are catching quickly. Laps can be run at break or lunch times, or sometimes in the morning before school !!

French visit a huge successThe visit of 16 pupils and 2 staff from Eridan International Ecole for 10 days, was a huge success. During their time they spent 3 days in school, learning in English, visited Stonehenge, Wells Cathedral and Glastonbury, took part in a language morning (learning Mandarin, Spanish and Latin !) and ran the Sports Relief Mile. They stayed with host families for the duration of their visit, to whom we are extremely grateful for their generosity and warmth.
A much shorter return visit is being planned for mid April, when 7 of our pupils shall fly out to Montpelier.
All of Hambridge take part in Sports ReliefIt was a cold blustery Friday afternoon, but all of our pupils donned their red socks and ran a mile to support sports relief. Indeed our French visitors also took part and one of them actually won it...without proper sports kit too. Over £126 was raised for the charity through the sale of red socks.
OFSTED say we are a 'good' school
The recent visit by two OFSTED inspectors resulted in the school being rated as 'Good' school. We are all very pleased with their findings and invite you to read the report by clicking the link above. |
FRENCH VISITORS COMINGWe shall be welcoming 16 french pupils and their teachers for the period March 9th - 17th. Enough of our families have offered to house a French pupil to make the exchange a reality. The pupils, from Ecole Internationale Eridan near Montpelier and aged between 9 and 11 will work in the school alongside our children, but shall also take the opportunity to visit Stonehenge and Wells Cathedral. That week we will have a language day where hopefully we will study some Mandarin and Chinese, and also take part in Sports Relief together. We are grateful to all our hosting families, as a return in June to Montpelier sounds mouthwatering ! |
Celebrating the end of the Japanese courseA super Japanese party was held at the home of Sensei Pathy Barker following our term long Japanese course. Sushi and sake were consumed along with miso soup. Next term it's French so the end of course party should be a gastronomic delight. !

One of the Brainiest families in BritainThe Allen family reached the finals of a competition organised by Nintendo and the Brain Academy a week last Sunday. First Richard qualified the family for the finals by appearing on a quiz on Virgin Radio and the following day the family went to London to appear in the Virgin Radio finals, which they duly won, qualifying them for the National Finals the following weekend. Ten families went head to head using the Nintendo Wii (which the Allen's had only been able to practice on for a day) playing a game called 'The Big Brain Academy'. On this occasion they did not come first, byt having already won a weekend family trip to Rome and a week for the family in Boston, plus a Nintendo Wii, I don't suppose they were too upset. WELL DONE to Richard, Dianne, Emily and Thomas. A tremendous achievement.
Sponsored Bike Ride raises £350Adam and Holly Davies organised, with their mother, a sponsored bike ride that took us from the Lamb and Lion in Hambridge to Drayton, Muchelney, Kingsbury, Stembridge and then finally over the Levels and back to Hambridge. In all the route was thought to be 10.5 miles. For more photos and a little more detail, see the Activities Gallery.
Environment WeekWhat a week of activities Mrs Powell and Miss Hammick arranged ! Monday saw us arriving at school wearing anything recycled or reused and workshops with Guy Clothier from SWAP (Somerset waste Action Programme). On Tuesday Action aid visited us and we learnt about life and reusing in Ghana. On Wednesday we visited Bristol Zoo to find out about endangered species and what we can do about it, while Thursday saw the County's 'Rising to the Challenge' team visit key stage 2 to talk about Climate Change and why it is occurring. Finally, on Friday, Christa Miller (our outreach science specialist from Huish Science College) and Miss Hammick organised a series of scientific workshops for all the pupils.
Class 2 and 3 have sat down together to look at the week's input and decide on some courses of action that we can take as a school community to look after not just our local environment, but also the World. These suggestions will be given to the 'School Council' to deliberate and produce a statement and guidelines for us all to follow.
During the week the classes also looked at a specific climatic region. Class 1 looked at the Polar Regions, Class 2 the Rainforests and Class 3 the Deserts. For a photo guide of all our activities, please look at the Activities Gallery
Parents take 'Mad' Wake and ShakePupil, staff and our SSCO Sally Pitkin stood in shock as the parents led the Wake and Shake last week. No one quite expected the Madness of 'Baggy Trousers'. It was a most exciting display and got the whole school involved. Any more parents want to shake us up a little ? or a full range of photos of the event, please look in the Activities Gallery
Whole school visits Bristol ZooAs part of our Environment Week, the whole school visited Bristol Zoo for the day on Wednesday. We enjoyed seeing the animals, and took part in workshops based on a variety of world environments (desert, rainforest and water).
Hambridge Cross Country
This annual event which takes place early in the academic year, attracted more runners and spectators than ever. Our sincere apologies for the parking fiasco which i think was born of foolishness and a panic to get to the races on time following delays in Langport. The competition was tougher than ever and our usually successful teams were unable to gain any first places. Well done to Freya Legg who took bronze in the Year 5/6 girls.
Class 3 visit special farmClass 3 went out on Wednesday 26th September for a special day to look at farming past and present and to plant wheat which they will harvest later on in the year. This followed our own Harvest Festival and will have reinforced the important role that farming plays in today's modern society and the reasons why Harvest was always seen as a crucial time. Incidentally, we became TV starts on the day as this rather unique event was covered by ITV news and Mr. Curry and two pupils played a starring role !
Astounding efforts on Book Character DayOnce again we marvel at the creativity of you all on our annual Book Character Day. This year we used the day to launch, rather than end our Book fayre and if you check out the activities Gallery you'll see just how much you got into it. Well done everybody !

Year 6 Leave from churchA clearly emotional and shaky Mrs Brown, took photos of the Leavers final moments at St James the Lesse Church in Hambridge on Tuesday 24th. The service presided over by Father Alan lasted an hour and was attended by year 6 parents, all the pupils and staff and other parents and relatives. The photos suggest Mrs Brown was clearly affected by the occasion...or was it the magnificent gift of the hand made trophy cabinet from the Year 6 parents which excited her. For further blurry photos, please see Activities Gallery !
We design our own T-shirts...and mouse mats...and bagsMrs Brown organised for the school to design their own bags, mouse mats or T-SHIRTS. A very exciting project was entered into by most pupils whose parents were then invited to purchase the items. Check out the Activities Gallery to see the results.
Peacechild strikes a chordThe whole school took part in this year's production of 'Peacechild', a sensitive tale of how a young baby is able to bring together two warring tribes who despise each other. The singing was as ever sensational and the performance very colourful. Unfortunately, we only have a few shots off the play in the Activities Gallery.
The whole school skips for charity !All our pupils took part in the Jump Rope For Heart initiative last week. After two weeks of training and awaiting fine weather every pupil was able to complete the exhausting challenge. For further details please see the activities gallery.
French day enjoyed by Class 3All of Class 3 took part in the French day held at Huish Science College. Each school prepared a short presentation for the finale in the afternoon, after they had enjoyed boules, a treasure hunt in french and other activities including a french lunch. Our version of 'What time is it Mr. Wolf' was so popular that it has been videoed for use in teacher training !
Art exhibition backs up music assemblyMrs Brown, Mrs Gatcombe and Mr Brandt put together a wonderful exhibition of the children's work over the year. When displayed altogether, it really does make one realise how talented our artists are.
Music assembly is a hitIt is now over 18 months since we started offering musical instrument tuition at the school and the investment in time by the school and money by you the parents is paying off. We now have children able to perform on a range of instruments and who are putting together small groups and ensembles. Take a look at the Activities Gallery to see the range of performers at the school.

Rugby team get just desertsAfter so many 'nearlies' this year, the rugby team won the utleigh Rugby tournament. In fact the organisers were so impressed with our girls that they have asked if it is possible to combine the Butleigh girls with the Hambridge girls to play a boys team !
SUMMER FAYRE A SUCCESS DESPITE THE RAINIt was more like the Winter Fayre, as the rain swept in and the bouncy castle stayed wrapped up until the hall was cleared ! Thanks to Anita Chew and FOHSA for all their hard work and to the children of Class 3 who braved the elements to try and run their stalls. For more pictures do see the 'Activities Gallery'.

Yrs 4, 5 and 6 safely back from campAfter an exhausting 4 day / 3 night trip to Gloucestershire Yrs 4,5 and 6 returned back to school on Monday afternoon. It was a case of plenty activity, plenty of food, late nights, early mornings and dodging the very heavy showers. A great time was had by pupils and staff. Why not visit the Activities Page to see the photo gallery....and the state of Ms Melbourne and Mrs Brown on the coach on the way home.
Tournament updateAt recent sports tournaments the school teams have had some hardluck stories. At the martock tournament the netball team tied for runners up but lost out on medals on goals difference, the girls football team went out in the semi finals after drawing their match to a Golden Goal in extra time and the U9's lost in the semis too.
At the Bruton Girls School Rugby Tournament our team lost by two tries to one in the semis in a very closely fought match.
At the Curry Malet Tournament our U11 football team lost 1-0 in a winner takes all final match (the first goal they conceded).
Finally at the CLP cricket tournament our A team lost only one match (by one run) but still couldn't finish in the top two

New access from car parkThe access to the school has been widened and the kerbstone dropped to allow for greater access for all users of the school. This should make entering the school grounds for wheelchair users, pushchairs etc much easier.
Talkschool Week is a massive success
The International Week, with 55 visitors from abroad went exceptionally well. 18 pupils from 9 schools were hosted by families from the school, while their teachers (37 of them) were housed in and around Langport. Working in tandem with the M.E.P.'s office and the Langport Area Development Trust, an exciting week of cultural and educational events were held. Massive contributions were made by the Friends of the School and individual parents. For photos of the week's action, please see the Activities Gallery.

HAMBRIDGE RUN TO CROSS COUNTRY SUCCESS
A superb performance by all 25 of our running team, and good team scores by all 4 teams (particularly the Yr 5 and 6 girls)ensured that the new small schools trophy was won by Hambridge ! The team looked just that bit sleeker as they donned their new running vests purchased by The Friends of the School. Check out all the pictures in the 'Activities Gallery'
Mrs Pizii hangs up her chalkMrs Pizii retired from teaching after twenty wonderful years at Hambridge and and over thirty years in Primary education altogether. Accolades poured in from Governors, past parents and staff and former pupils from as far away as Australia. Fishing Club paid their own tribute, the Governors held an 'informal' party and a formal church service was held at 'St James the Lesse' Church. For photos of the event, please see the activities gallery.
SCHOOL GETS 'GOOD' IN INSPECTION
We were delighted with the inspection report by Her Majesty's Inspectors for 'Sustainable Development'. The full report can be viewed by clicking on the link. Though this is a relatively new aspect for schools to be inspected upon, we feel that future generations should be looking after our environment better than generations before and now have done, and the government want to ensure that all schools are conveying this message by 2020 ! As you can see in the report though, it is not solely about recycling, reusing and reducing. It's also about giving everybody their say and the way we respect each other as well as having a global dimension. Do read the report. |
CUP DONATED TO SCHOOLWe were delighted to receive a trophy in the memory of David Ridges. Here his widow, Mrs Ridges and Dick Roberts, church warden and school governor present the trophy to one of our pupils. We have been requested to present the trophy for diligence, which would have been close to Mr Ridges heart.
CYCLING AWARENESS SUCCESSVirtually everybody in Years 5 and 6 took part in the week long cycling course run by the school with tremendous volunteer tutor support from, Mrs Corms, Mr Rowswell, Mrs Osmond, Mr Brandt, Mrs Pitts, Mr Masters, Mr Seal, and Mrs Denley. The course was overseen by the Road Safety Unit. All the pupils took the course extremely seriously and fully deserved their certificates. The course itself concentrated on: knowing the safety aspects of their bikes, control exercises based in the playground, cycling theory and the highway code and ,of course, learning how to cycle safely on the roads. Comments from the monitoring team were:
'A well run course with confident and keen tutors and well behaved and receptive children'
'Good use of limited junctions'
Unfortunately, we were so busy administering the course that did not get round to taking any photographs ! Hopefully, this will encourage some of our pupils and parents to cycle to school rather than drive ! |
WALK TO SCHOOL DAYThe first 'Walk to school Day' initiated by the School Council was a tremendous success, despite the drizzle ! There were some very creative modes of transport. See 'Activities' for more pictures.
