Quote of the week: By the Year 2020 the largest employer in the developed world will be 'self' - Nicholas Negroponte
Dear Parent,
Well the snow and ice has gone, to be replaced by beautiful blue skies and milder weather
but for how long ? In fact we were only able to test drive the new minibus this Friday, when the roads were clear. It smells wonderful and the first outing will be this Thursday as the chess club take on Milborne Port.
Badger Club
Mrs Evans, with support form Mrs Brister, will be starting a Badger Club at the school from early March. The club is the younger arm of St John Ambulance and more information about the club will be coming from the leaders themselves in the near future. The club will run in the Woodpecker Room, after school (6.15 - 7.30) on Thursdays.
Parents Evening
We have scheduled these for Tuesday March 2nd and Thursday March 4th. These are a little later than previous years, but are the only dates where the school has a clear evening for all staff. We shall once again use Year 6 pupils to escort parents to the meetings and keep the staff on time. This is the opportunity to look at your child's work so far this term and we would recommend you arrive early so that you can view the work before meeting the staff. Sometimes parents ask if it would be ok to take their child's books home to look at for a more prolonged time. We are more than happy for you to do this, provided the books come back to school the next day !!
Residential
We shall shortly be sending out some paying in cards so that you may pay for the trip to the Isle of Wight over a period of time, now Christmas is behind us. We shall hold an evening for parents to learn more about the site, once Mr Crabtree has been able to visit it in action.
Talkschool
I shall be visiting Slovenia on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th February to help set up the conference for this year and also to do our risk assessments. Unfortunately, it means I shall miss the FOHSA Disco, which is the Friday evening we break up for half term.
Clubs
All get underway this week, with the exception of catering which will start shortly. Could we ask that all attendees of clubs that require a payment, do so promptly please, with cheques for Mrs Pathy Barker to be made payable directly to her. This, of course, can be sent to the office.
Give it a go
This is a government initiative offering any child on Free School Meals the opportunity to access activity clubs (based at school or outside) up to a value of £300 per year. It is due to roll out in Somerset from April, and when we learn more about this we shall publish more details. One thing that is clear, is that it has to be applied for through the school.
FMSIS
The school was inspected in December to see whether we meet the Financial Management Standards in Schools. I would like to offer my congratulations to Mrs Izzard in the office and the school's Business Committee, under the stewardship of Mr Brandt, for meeting those rather exacting standards. There is still a little work to be done before we receive the logo though !!!
International award
Within a few days of becoming our International link co-ordinator, Miss Chattoe applied for and received the Intermediate Award for the International work of the school. We intend to go for the full award later this year, and as part of that we shall be holding a world wide week in the summer term.
Eridan visit
I shall attach a proforma below for anyone to express an interest in hosting a child from The Eridan International Ecole during week beginning March 22nd. We shall be looking to return to Montpelier in the summer term for a long weekend.
Water aid
You may remember that we raffled the harvest donations that were not taken to Vaughan Lee House and raised a tidy sum of money for Water Aid. As a thanks for this fund raising, water aid are sending a speaker to the school this Friday. Parents are invited to join the pupils in the Village Hall at 9.15 to hear the speaker, so if you are not doing anything then, please do drop in.
Love in a Box
We still await the boxes to be delivered to the children in Uganda. Apparently the infra structure is such that once in Uganda, it can take quite a while to be distributed within the country.
RSPB Birdwatch
Today sees the beginning of our 2 week birdwatch. Class 4 have made some birdfeeders and we shall be observing which birds and how many of them visit the school over this period. We have a few parents who have a strong interest in birdwatching and who have offered to come in and help, but if this is the first you have heard of this initiative, and want to assist, please see Mrs Powell.

Please return to the office
We would be interested in hosting a French child from Eridan International Ecole. I understand that there will be the option for my child to return to Montpelier and be hosted themselves at a later date should we wish.
